| Je ne saurais plus dire quand et où j’ai rencontré ce peintre, mais je sais que le « click » s’est fait quand j’ai vu cette image : Alcañiz, 1961 Attirée par cette atmosphère étrange, j’ai recherché à savoir plus et l’ai trouvé dans ce livre : Jenny Pery, Painter Pilgrim: The Art and Life of Tristram HillierIcily elegant, eerily still, Tristram Hillier’s work presents a dreamlike, post-apocalyptic world in which human beings, rarely seen on stage, seem to be refugees from disaster.(je sais que pas tous les parfumés comprennent l’anglais, mais je voudrais aussi vous épargner de ma propre traduction des textes de Jenny Pery ) | |

| Educated by monks and conditioned by a bleak childhood set against the background of World War I, then, as a young painter exposed to the influence of European Surrealism – itself an answer to the horrors of the war – Hillier arrived at a personal symbolism that fitted neatly into the Surrealist camp in England. Although he declined any active part in the movement’s groups and, with English reticence, avoided the more extreme imagery of Surrealism, he was by instinct and cast of mind a Surrealist, perhaps the most important and committed English Surrealist of his time. Throughout his life his particular vision never wavered.Composition (Interior), 1933 | |

| Surrealist landscape, men and boat, 1934 Hillier was soon producing impressive paintings such as Surrealist Landscape – Man and Boat and the sinister Variation on the Form of an Anchor. But although he shared some of the aims of Unit One, the major influence on his work were Continental. The dream world he painted shows traces of Salvador Dali (whom he later came to consider a vulgarian), Yves Tanguy and Giorgio de Chirico, as well as the Cubist-Surrealist Jean Lurçat. Hillier, however, never became a fantasist in the Daliesque manner. For the most part, he wished to portray a world in which subtle alternations to reality were understated, creating an unsettling mood rather than a fullblown nightmare. | Oui, merci ! Je ne connais pas du tout ce Tristam Hillier et pourtant... déjà l'impression de l'avoir rencontré à travers Dali (Surrealist landscape, men and boat, 1934), De Chirico (Alcañiz, 1961) ou Magritte (Variations on the Form of an Anchor, 1939). Mais il est aussi singulier... Las Lavanderas me font presque penser à du Miyazaki... Et cette Route des Alpes moderne et désenchantée (?) est d'un réalisme sidérant | |
